re: Nothing cute about it.

I didn't bring up the other religions because the context was Catholics. I can if you want.

The xenophobia curve has two far ends. You seem fully aware of the one end.

The other end is the belief that we have no real enemies, just friends that we somehow pissed off. The Cold War itself was long ago rewritten into this category.

If you ask a typical academic about it now, he will tell you that the U.S.S.R. was a decrepit wreck of a country, run by harmless old men, unable to threaten anyone seriously, with its capabilities blown into a frightening boogeyman by the U.S. military industrial complex who needed a threat to keep military spending up. The Soviet Union then collapsed for no particular reason, while that drooling idiot Reagan just happened to be standing there scratching himself.

If you ask a typical academic about the War on Terror, you will get much the same thing.

If you think I'm imagining the inroads Islamism is making into the conventional Far Left, fine. The Palestinians have been a fixture there for years. I suppose it'll become obvious enough eventually.
