Oh, I get it, the bandwagon effect: Republicans see the handwriting on the wall and have decided to get in on the ground floor of the action.
That's not completely sarcasm, either: The core Republican message of fear is that the threat is so overwhelming that we must be prepared to give up our democratic values and principles in order to oppose it. The Republican message: Tyranny is stronger than democracy. Vote for us and we'll protect you.
