Nothing cute about religious persecution. I notice you didn't bring up the Muslims or the Orthodox, or the Buddhists.

Nothing cute about terrorizing a bunch of 7- and 8-year-olds, either. Though I was the kid who wondered, first, whether the Russians would really be able to invade America, and second, if they did, whether they would have other things to do than to round up little Catholic kids to shoot them in the sacristies of churches. Yet the lesson in dying like St. Tarsicius has given me some insight into the cult of the martyr being used to such, um, productive effect in the Middle East.

I notice that you ignored my point, that classification of "Those Not Like Us" as "Enemy", no matter how different they are from each other, is really, really stupid. Unless fear is the only thing you have to unify your group. Then it works, in the short run. In the long run, we will all have to live together anyway, and many of us won't change to humor the American Right.
