The article could just as easily been about other things besides a flag. I saw an article a long time ago very similar to this one (I can't find it again right now), with the writer expressing snide condescension toward "those people." The subject that time was observing a mother and her children praying in a McDonalds before they ate.
The main point is the seemingly inherent self-righteousness and contempt on the part of some people for those who aren't "enlightened" enough to know that the world is crap, and that Amerikkkans and their stupid outdated ideals are responsible for most of it.
In any conflict between fanatics, and those who are unable to believe in any values of their own, the fanatics will win. I'm afraid this will be seen eventually in Europe.
When you're throwing out the old values, be careful not to empty the bin entirely.

Incidentally, I see that a lot of people missed the point.
