Do Republicans hate freedom?
Show me where Republicans have ACTUALLY succeeded in shoving their social values down America's throat. I can think of one example, maybe two, and both are trivial.
Why does it matter whether you've succeeded or not? You're trying, and that's what counts.
Or are you admitting that Republican appeals to social conservatives are a cynical ploy, and that Republicans don't intend to ever deliver on an anti-gay marriage amendment, or an anti-flag burning amendment, or an anti-abortion amendment, or on any solution to all the hot buttons you've been pressing?
You can't have it both ways, and either way looks pretty bad.
What you call "Democratic social ambitions" is another way of saying "the mainstream progressive values that have characterized America from its founding". America was a progressive nation, up until Republicans got too much power. Consider just the right to vote: It started out that only white male property owners could vote, but over two centuries the right to vote has expanded--progressed--to the point where we can finally say we have a democracy without having to have footnotes and fine print laying out the exceptions. The history of America has always been about expanding freedom and expanding opportunity...until Republicans took power.
Republicans have vowed to destroy every vestige of FDR's New Deal, and turn the clock back to the 1920s. That is a direct repudiation of Roosevelt's Four Freedoms:
In the future days which we seek to make secure, we look forward to a world founded upon four essential human freedoms.
The first is freedom of speech and expression --everywhere in the world.
The second is freedom of every person to worship God in his own way-- everywhere in the world.
The third is freedom from want, which, translated into world terms, means economic understandings which will secure to every nation a healthy peacetime life for its inhabitants--everywhere in the world.
The fourth is freedom from fear, which, translated into world terms, means a world-wide reduction of armaments to such a point and in such a thorough fashion that no nation will be in a position to commit an act of physical aggression against any neighbor --anywhere in the wold.
There is not a one of those four freedoms that Republicans aren't threatening.
Do today's radical conservatives "jest hate freedom"? Not exactly. Radical conservatives seem to define freedom very differently than progressives. More of a technical freedom: Lack of restraint coupled with lack of opportunity, making freedom nothing more than a theoretical possibility. Kind of like saying to somebody in a leaky spacesuit "You're free to breathe, I'm not stopping you. Sure, I got oxygen, but I'm not sharing any of it. But I'm not abridging your freedom to breathe".
(I've started reading George Lakoff's "Whose Freedom?", can ya tell? It's pretty obvious that whatever I'm currently reading leaks into my writing, so I just thought I'd disclose the source of my latest influence. More as I read on.)
Progressives understand that the proper role of government is to guarantee freedom in its fullest sense, including the responsibility to provide access to its prerequisites. Anything less is hypocrisy. Progressives aren't Libertarians--we understand that individualistic anarchy (or is Libertarianism anarchic individualism?) is merely the gestation phase of feudalism, and we're determined not to go back there.
Unlike today's RightWing extremists.
