But I left in 2000. I'm speaking from 30+ years of living in the region. After 2001 There must be 100,000 times more US flags in existence than there were prior to 9/11/2001. Back in the day, it was passing Worthington Ford on Bellflower Blvd to see the largest flag in the region.

If what you say is true, than Stein has less reason to condemn "those people" who fly flags, since he would be criticizing his own city and offending his readership.

Then again...maybe that was what he was trying to do. Embarass the Angelinos who fly the flag?
