Gas tax holiday compromise

It's pretty clear most everyone on this board, left and right, think the gas tax holiday is a really stupid idea, but there may be a way to extract some benefit from the conflict.

Why not a gas tax holiday on diesel fuel? Truckers and trains are not likely to take long vacations on artificially cheap fuel this summer, and gasoline consumers will still be forced to conserve and keep up road repair revenues, but a trucker's tax holiday would keep overall transport costs down, which would help slow down an inflationary spiral, save jobs, and encourage consumer purchase of diesel cars, all factors which will help the economy and the energy budget. And if the plan works, it will result in lives saved as the diesel tax is extended to heating oil savings this winter.

Encouraging people to burn more fuel is irresponsible, but if that fuel use helps keep prices down, keep people warm, and save jobs, it starts making sense.
