The weirdest idea I have to deal with sometimes is the concept that without government, there can be no such thing as standards, organization, competence, or any of the other things that an education system (or any other human endeavor) requires.
Of course I don't advocate "getting rid of" the current public education system in five years any more than I advocate immediately scrapping Social Security. The idea is to start to lay the groundwork for more choice and more independence from centralized "One Size Fits All" government programs (see: "No Child Left Behind" for a good example of one of those). Let people come up with workable solutions that don't have to come out of an office in Washington or the state capital, that are largely managed locally.
For starters they could stop trying to crush homeschooling, vouchers, or any other concept that raises its head and offers even the smallest alterative to the Monolith. It kind of gives the impression that the educational establishment is a little worried about people having a choice.
I've posted a number of times on how we're spending three times the amount of money per student in our public schools that we were spending forty years ago (in constant dollars). Not much of that increase went to teacher salaries. Are we getting three times the results?
I'm not trying to scrap what we've got. I'm trying to open it up a little.
