In answer to your question.

You conveniently missed the key modifier to "student"......"qualified". Diplomas, or scholarships, should not be handed out indiscriminately to all those who show up, or to all those who can afford one, either. No resource is infinite, all must be rationed, and education is no exception. But it should be rationed by prior academic performance, not by price.

As for there not being a working class, that's going to be big news to anyone who was ever in it, or whose parents were. This otherwise intelligent person knows exactly what working class is, having spent most of my life (not always successfully) trying my damndest to stay out of it and all of my youth watching my parents never able to leave it. Do you really think my politics come out of a book?

And what the hell does Cuba have to do with any of this? My grandfather went to medical school in Havana in 1910, well before Castro was even born, and when Cuba was a capitalist nation. It ain't just socialist states that educate their brightest kids at public expense. All civilized societies do. In fact, as far as I'm concerned, that is a necessary and sufficient condition for civilization.
