Vouchers are a government subsidy for church schools...

...who won't pay any taxes, either.

Maybe some private schools will be non-denominational, but "private schooling" is mostly Arabic for religious schooling, and usually from so yahoo religious sect. If they want vouchers, fine, but make them available strictly for secular schools.

But that's neither here nor there. The private sector does a very good job--for those who can afford it. But it sucks for the rest of us.

I was the second person in my family to go to college, the first was my grandfather, at the University of Havana in the early years of the 20th century. And he went at government expense, because he was able to pass the examinations due to the training he got in the public schools of La Habana Province. Cuba had government fully-subsidized college tuitions way before the USA did.

Grandpa had to leave the University because of politics( or maybe a woman, the story was never clear) so it was left to me to become the first person in my family to ever graduate from University. The only reason I was able to attend was because of public funding, my deceased father's Social Security and GI Benefits. My widowed mother certainly could not afford to send me. Later, I finished up with my own GI benefits and with NSF job subsidies and grants to my department to cover my work for the Astronomy department and my graduate assistantship.

If it had not been for the "welfare" system, it is highly unlikely I would ever have gone to college, and I would have been condemned to whatever the equivalent of flipping burgers was appropriate for my contemporaries. My father never went, in spite of his GI Bill, because for the few years he survived after the war he had to help support me.

Education is like health care. All qualified children are ENTITLED to it. They are entitled to it because for the majority of people, no amount of work, ambition, or even intelligence will replace a daddy with bucks who can afford it. Any other system is a scam designed to keep the working class in their place and the entrepreneurial-managerial-professional class down to a manageable size. Denying education to the poor keeps them poor, the working class learned that in the 60s.

So who will pay for it? The same people who pay for it now. EVERY education is subsidized by the taxpayer. The well-to-do, even if they pay full tuition at a "private" school, do not pay the full cost of their kid's college degrees. Tuition payments are merely the method used to deny those taxpayer subsidies to the poor and preserve them for those who can afford the price of admission.
