initiated a highly effective boycott of German goods and services
Economic sanctions that despite their "effectiveness," didn't really accomplish a thing. Hmmm.
I wasn't referring to boycotts and bad words, I was referring to a military attack by Britain, France and perhaps others against Germany to stop Nazi agression before it had a chance to get rolling.
You've no doubt heard that Hitler's reaction to news that Britain had declared war against Germany was an astonished "What do we do now?" That shock to his system needed to come before he'd unleashed his own forces, not after. As it happened, Chamberlain's desire for peace had the effect of encouraging war. His pascifism, and that of others, invited aggression.
Was Germany treated harshly after ww1? Unquestionably, but I'm sure you'd agree that turning a blind eye while it swallow up contested territories was clearly not the way to redress the matter. Trouble was, Hitler was far too skillful and the soon-to-be-allied-leaders far too eager to beleive his assurances. They needed to be more skeptical of a dictator's words and less reluctant to exercise the military option, perhaps the their only means of stopping him.
