There's political crap going on on both sides. On the part of some people on the Left, there is a clear impression that this is really about kicking those damn social conservatives in the head, and I have seen more than one linkage to the abortion issue.
From today's Mercury News editorial:
On Monday, after conservative Republicans insisted on interfering in Terri Schiavo's ordeal, a federal judge heard her parents' case for extending her life.
It is unlikely that U.S. District Judge James Whittemore will come to a different conclusion than the 19 state judges who sided with the wishes of Schiavo's husband to let her die. But if the judge orders the feeding tube reinserted while he considers the case, the media spotlight will go on. And the right-to-life movement, which has convinced many Americans that a 12-week-old fetus experiences pain during an abortion, will continue to pretend that Terri Schiavo has some idea what is going on around her.
This isn't just a tragedy. It's another front in a long cultural war.
I can't help thinking that many of the same liberals insisting on allowing the woman to starve to death, claiming that she has had more than sufficient time in court, would be standing and wailing with lit candles outside the prison walls where a murderer was being executed by painless injection. A murderer who has, typically, had far more time in dozens of appeals courts than Terri ever did.
I can't also help wondering how much different withholding food and water is than withholding air. Why not just suffocate her with a pillow? Sure as hell it would be faster.
I don't know the details of the whole story even now, but my gut still tells me this stinks.

- Why will the husband accept no solution other than her death? Maybe because he promised her.
