They only care about pandering for votes from the religious right. In fact, there's a Republican Party memo that actually documents this fact.
Would this be referring to the memo documented here?
Excerpts (if so):
This is an important moral issue and the pro-life base will be excited that the Senate is debating this important issue.
* This is a great political issue, because Senator Nelson of Florida - has already refused to become a cosponsor and this is a tough issue for Democrats.
The idea of being "excited" about the hopeless plight of this poor woman's for its "great" political angle is appalling if true, but I share the concerns expressed here.
Excerpt:
It is described as "unsigned." What does this mean? Most Senate and House memos are written on letterhead that show whose office they came from. Is this memo on such letterhead? Apparently not. As best I can tell, it is anonymous. Is it simply a one-page memo on blank white paper that purports to come from a Republican? If so, is there any reason to assume that it is genuine? How does the Senate's mail system work? Can anyone write an anonymous memo, and send it to 55 Republican Senators, with a copy to ABC News?
Has this memo actually been publicly released, carefully examined and independently verified? All due care should be taken in light of its explosive contents.

- Why will the husband accept no solution other than her death? Maybe because he promised her.
