I find it hard to believe that 20 years ago, she happened to mention if she was every in her current situation, she didn’t want to be kept alive. The DNR (do not resuscitate) was not the issue it is now, 20 years ago. I also question his motives.
Look into Schiavo eyes and tell me there is nothing there. Her eyes look very aware. She looks around and her eyes seem to respond. If it wasn’t for her eyes, and the awareness I see, I would say let her go. But I don’t think she is brain dead, and who really knows her current wishes.
I heard a guy on the radio talkshow this morning say. “Too bad she didn’t murder someone, then they would be fighting to keep her alive.†He was referring to how certain people fight tooth and nail to keep murders alive, especially those mentally handicapped murders.
This is very dangerous ground we are treading for- deciding who lives and who dies based on their medical conditions. There are many reasons relatives might want their loved ones dead that have nothing to do with quality of life- inheritance, insurance or they just don’t want to mess with it. This is dangerous ground to walk.
Anyway, I agree with you Tom. Let the parents have custody over her.
