<You also incorrectly seemed to claim that we live in a democracy. We don't. Our form of government is a representative republic. We never have and never will be a democracy.
But then what is a democracy?
Looks like you read this interpretation.
Hmm, well, I like these comments.
A democracy can only exist if all decisions are made, through referendums, directly by the people?
Well, it exists in Switzerland. Switzerland is a country physically isolated from the others (because of the mountains) and is very rich and conservative and the hardest thing for a foreigner is to obtain Switzerland citizenship, but the eeasiest thing is to deposit money (whatever its source) in one of their banks. Referendums show how conservative the country is. For instance, it took years for men to finally admit and vote in favor of women to have the right to vote. There are positive things like the federal nature of the state, that inspire the rest of Europe.
A democracy through representation allows for long term decisions to be made, and not just those inspired by gutt reactions. Long term decisions are very often unpopular in the beginning.
And while we are at it, those representatives must face the people at regular intervals if they want to be elected or re-elected.
Now, if those representatives are behaving badly, commit unlawful deeds, well, journalists would only be too happy to go after them, wouldn't they? That would be a great story and sell lots of newspapers or TV time! Yes, in democracies, there's the fourth power, the power of the press.
