Patience.

Some places are just naturally environmentally crappy, like Los Angeles. The area was called "Valley of Smokes" when the Indians lived there, due to the stagnant air holding campfire emissions. I personally would not live there, but more for cultural than pollution reasons.

As far as car pollution goes, I think you will find that more people are thinking more like you every day. The automobile companies are responding, because they want to sell what the customer wants to buy, and frankly, most customers would prefer a low-pollution to a high-pollution one if it is at all comparable in performance and price.

The free market always works.

All car companies are investing hundreds of millions in low-pollution technology. GM rolled its hydrogen fuel cell demonstrator out here in California (technical specs). Okay, there's a hydrogen tank in the thing, but the road is filled with propane-powered trucks and cars with big propane tanks, and nobody cares.

In addition, the next few years will see a huge slew of hybrids hit the market (not just demos), including cars large enough to get the interest of large families.

It's coming around, Mary Anne. In thirty years the gas-powered vehicle may be relegated to construction sites and special high-powered applications. I have a lot more faith in private industry than I do in our government representatives, which may put me in a minority, but there it is.

BTW, electric trolleys and trains generate ozone... ;)
