Ozone has been linked to asthma in kids with no particular background of asthma, particularly those kids who participate in sports or physical activity during high ozone days.
Around here we have "spare the air" days when the haze gets particularly thick, and we are supposed to back down a bit from physical activity and things like lawnmowing or barbecuing. Ozone is a problem where there is a lot of emissions, and not a lot of air movement. The ozone is generated by the action of sun and heat on the emissions (Nitrogen oxides and volatiles), not directly from the pollution sources themselves.
Ozone problems show up in areas that have heavy pollution, or lighter pollution and a LOT of sun and heat. A price paid for living in or near metro areas, or like Mary Anne, downwind of one.
