Tough luck for Joe's Trucking

Of course the bad news will be for low-end truckers who, unlike the large corporations, can't afford to replace all their trucks on a whim. The small businessman generally takes it in the neck with these kinds of regulations, as I saw here in California when similar regulations annihilated the mom-and-pop gas stations.

Of course, since no one in the environmental movement knows jack shit about economics, the hit on the U.S. economy that will result from a sudden rise in truck fuel prices, or a sudden fuel shortage, will be a total surprise. I'm not sure a lot of people realize how much of our industry runs on diesel fuel.

I guess we'll see what happens. No one listened to what the industrialists had to say about it.

Negotiations between environmentalists and industry rarely get anywhere because the environmentalists are convinced to the marrow of their bones that industrialists are creatures of monstrous evil, who would gleefully watch their own children cough up their lungs if it meant another dollar in their pocket. Therefore any protests from industry about the feasibility of these standards, either financial or technical, must of course be lies, and no attention should be paid to them.

This tends to make discussions difficult, as can be seen in the article.

What's really funny is I remember the environmentalists back in the '70s switching to diesel cars because of the better mileage...
