Really. Bundle the kid up warmly and put him outside in 25 degrees (F.). The swollen bronchial tubes shrink right up, and the air passages are clear in a remarkably short time. Are walk-in freezers considered a medical expense for asthmatics living in warm climates? ;)
Croup is so scary, and the panic makes it worse.
I hear what you're saying about UV. We (of the blue eyes, light blue skin and the blond and red highlights in the hair) live that way here in the cloudier climes. Lots of loose, tight-weaved, light-colored, full-lenth cotton clothing, with hats and sunglasses. Either too much ozone or not enough...
You are, of course, right about the emissions. I had forgotten about buses -- not having been behind one in ever so long -- but could have drawn the same conclusion if I had thought about my daily experiences with farm trucks. I still don't think that's a reason to dismiss mass transit (not that you said that either), but rather to improve the technology. Right now we seem to be caught in an inactivity loop. It's not cost effective to fix because not enough people use it. Not enough people use it because it's more convenient and not too economically onerous to drive. When the price of gas goes up sufficiently to make driving more of a problem than it is (gridlock and road rage haven't sprung up out of nowhere), we may see more demand for mass transit. It would be smart to anticipate and fix the emissions problem now, before it gets worse because there are more buses. Maybe a new approach, or an old one revisited, like electric trolleys, would be more workable.
As an aside, I wonder what the osteoporosis situation will be in the no-walking-fast-food culture of the Southwest when the girls raised there reach retirement age. You can get your calcium requirements by drinking milkshakes and putting cheese on everything, but I wouldn't recommend it.
Thanks for your good wishes for my kids. I hope they get over their activity-induced asthma too.

Mary Anne
