<...Find me one place where I said driving certain cars should be illegal, and I take it all back.
I think this is an important point.
Bitching about something is certainly no crime--otherwise I would be staring up from the bottom of the Black Hole of Calcutta.
Loudly proclaiming that anyone driving an SUV is a selfish idiot is also no crime. It's an opinion, and I myself have enough of those for six normal people. A search engine would reveal how many times I have referred to assorted people as "idiots" in these posts.
It is not people like Mary Anne that are the problem. It is the people who get into positions of political power and feel that their every opinion ought to be a law, and these are the people I normally am railing against. These are the people who think along the lines of the subject line of this post.* Okay, maybe Mary Anne might VOTE for someone who, as one of many positions, promised to outlaw SUVs, but that's a fine point.
*I first saw the line, "Everything Not Forbidden is Compulsory" in T. H. White's "Once and Future King," when young
Arthur ("Wart") has been changed into an ant by Merlin to learn something about society. I don't know if that is original with him. This episode, along with about 80 percent of this marvelous book, never made it into the mildly entertaining but horribly shrunken Disney cartoon version.
I also learned the word "fewmets," which I used with great amusement in front of adults in school.
I attempted to read White's book to my daughter--I have a firm policy of exposing my kids to the original books that movies are made out of--but Katie lost interest. I may try it on Zach, who although younger, took to the Prydain Chronicles more eagerly than Katie did. Katie is a solid Terry Pratchett fan, and is mostly only rereading old Discworld books while waiting for the new ones to come out.
