And I thought I got into trouble with Spires!
Mary Anne - I hope you get over this. There are far too few of us on this board who will own a liberal viewpoint, and you do it far more graciously than I. And they need to do something besides feed off themselves. Keep doing that, and sooner or later they will start believing each other.
Regarding the insults, ad hominem arguments, and personal comments - I think it was possibly the only true Christian who said, "Forgive them Father, for they know not what they do." I believe that.
As people mature they can grow out of the "might makes right" and "anything which infringes on what I want to do is wrong" sort of thinking. I know I have.
As a kid, we were all there. And in a group, such as basic training, that sort of attitude is fostered. As one gets older, confronts a few dilemmas, meets a few different cultures, and finds nice folks in all of them, the mind changes a bit. I believe compassion is a learned trait, as is gratitude. It could happen with them, but only if they're exposed to other points of view. After a while they'll have to start wondering. And I have some very good friends, with whom I can discuss politics, who are very conservative.
And, finally, and most important, nothing on these things is personal. Actually, nothing is personal, but especially nothing on these boards, whether it's from me, you, or "them". They try to make it personal, but it's like peeing into the wind. It always just blows back on the source.
Please stick around, and I hope Lindy comes back. Nothing's personal.
