Scattered throught this thread, Rightists are parroting that old chestnut:
[Insert reluctant ally] should damn well grown up and shoulder the burden of their own defense!
Well, guys, you need to stay current on policy directives from the Bush Regime, particularly this:
Our forces will be strong enough to dissuade potential adversaries from pursuing a military buildup in hopes of surpassing or equaling, the power of the United States.
--National Security Strategy
September 2002
It is now the official policy of the United States to take a dim view of other nations who fully shoulder their own defense burdens. We will not allow other nations to build up their militaries to approach parity with the US.
Consider Europe, the favorite target of that Rightist chestnut. It has the economic muscle to, if provoked, build a military that equals our surpasses our own. If they do so, they become, by definition, a threat to US supremacy.
The apparently unconsidered consequence of the new policy is that the US must foster military dependency among our "allies". We're committed to footing the bill as a matter of strategic policy.
