You and I, with considerable help from Davin, have stumbled into illustrating the limits of building faerie castles of logic to either exonerate or damn Bush. Bush, and America's honor, can only be saved by discovery of the hard evidence of WMD in Iraq. That is looking more remote as time drags on.
The world, including those Americans who aren't diehard Bush partisans, won't accept excuses, no matter how plausible. We have a serious problem here. Bush took a big gamble, and seems to have lost. He's traded America's credibility, leadership, and respect for the pale consolation of fear. Without WMD to justify his war against Iraq, he's positioned America as simply a bully, the 900 pound gorilla that can compel obedience through killing those who oppose our will.
We could trade logical constructs till the end of time without changing that fundamental fact. America's going to pay a heavy price for Bush's actions, and I am not happy about that.
The way I see it, even if Bush didn't lie and sincerely believed that Iraq posed an imminent threat to the US, he nevertheless made a serious mistake, and the only way to salvage America's honor is to boot him out of office in 2004. I think that the world will give us that much time to rectify the mistake of our leader. God help us if we bless Bush's actions by reelecting him.
