Tops had to be made to a pretty fine tolerances, especially regarding balance. I think that today's China-made toys can't put the necessary quality into producing toys like that. Today's yo-yos are pretty lame because they are imbalanced.
Tops were a toy for folks with a certain amount of patience and dexterity. I just don't think there are as many kids today willing to learn how to spin a top or learn how to "walk the dog".
I suspect they are the victims of progress and the electronics age which gives them more rewards for any effort. Video games are all about easy rewards. Tops and skilled toys offer no such rewards. You don't see too many kids building slot cars or other pastimes which require developing and honing skills, either.
The top is a great example of the vortical movement of energy and more importantly the importance of balance. It makes little vortical loops as it travels even while it is spinning itself. And it begins to wobble as it passes energy to the ground. And the wobble quickly expends huge amounts of the energy it has been balancing within itself and soon it tumbles and falls once it is imbalanced.
We are much the same way. We hold energy within and when we become imbalanced we lose a great deal of energy to our surroundings. As long as we can remain balanced we are standing tall - and when we are imbalanced, we'll find ourself in the gutter or on the ground quickly.
