I graduated from the 8th grade in 1954 at the age of 13. We had desks in rows, and our job on those Mondays was to crawl under our desks as best we could, at least your head and neck. It was awkward.
Huge sirens wailed sometime around noon or 5 after. Had friends whose parents built bomb shelters, as if our neck of the woods was the most important place in the world. Every commie in the world had his or her eyes on our location, strategically located as it was within a days drive of a defense establishment, and only two days to San Francisco.
And talk about indoctrination. The rumor was that in case of invasion the Boy Scouts were to report to the school gym to receive .22s, the same .22s generations of us had worn out using for target practice at the local armory.
