I grew up in Ontario and remember going through those drills in elemementary school in the late 1950's. We conducted drills (can't remember if they were weekly or monthly), probably Friday mornings when the loud siren would go off. We had to line up in single file, exit the classroom and go down the steps to the basement (where the lunch room was). The whole school. I'm pretty sure we got under the desks at some point too, in the earlier years. They kept up the drills and made them into fire drills afterwards, and we'd go outside then.
God, that was a long time ago.
I remember a few things back then. My second grade teacher Mrs. Anderson. And the "cloak rooms" that were behind the teachers' desk where you hung your coats, hats and took your boots off. And the desks, and the ink wells.
