Early '60s strategy.
Back then some of the interceptor fighter planes had nuclear weapons. The theory being that the pilots would fly into a formation of Russian bombers and detonate them.
I asked how on Earth they could get Americans to do that.
The answer was there wasn't going to be anything to come home to, anyway.
