...you've been here long enough to see that many posters come here to poop on folks and only start posting prolificly when such an opportunity arises. These folks live for the scuffles, the bickering and the threads...
...that go like this.
.............bickering endlessly
...................enjoying every retort
.............................living for the last word
...................................even if they have to resort to (n/t) comments.
They arenot here to share insights or brainstorm ideas. It's much easier to insult others and try to tear them down in a failed quest to elevate themselves in the process. It's quite sad to watch actually. There are some bitter, insecure folks here and their bitterness is like a poison which taints threads and derails them. Responding to them intelligently is pointless because they live for the retort not intelligent discourse. After enough time you're already sorting out who's who and what's what. You recognize the ideologues and the knife fighters itching for an opportunity to see some poster bleed. There are folks here who can't say a kind word about anyone and others, who as far as I can tell have never made a flame, or uttered a word in anger period (!aicram) and that's why they don't fit in too well in amongst those who revel in their intolerance and justify every ounce of it.
One of my greatest disillusionments about chat rooms was the inability for deep conversing. That's why I started stopping by the MSNBC bulletin boards. Yet even those boards were shut down because of the preponderance of folks who like to flame, shout, complain or insult - that's their big contribution. That's their sole pathetic satisfaction. Like a 100 monkeys swinging around the cages throwing feces at other monkeys, that was what the MSNBC boards became and so the plug was pulled.
Every time someone with the capacity for deep discussion comes along the flamers and insulters try their damnedest to derail such intelligent conversation - because they know they will not be able to contribute to it in any meaningful way. These disrupters become experts at keeping the status quo, talking about the weather 500 times a day and flaming others.
In the early days there were still some deep discussions, but now it is, more often than not, shallow stuff and that's a real loss. As this board ages, I'm also seeing a certain depression manifest in the posting comments and a general lack of enthusiasm for all things mixed with a subtle bitterness. That's a bit of a downer too.
It get's harder and harder to build up enthusiasm for making good posts in such an environment. Good folks are driven off or post less and less. And it certainly makes this place a far cry from its namesake.
