Came across a page with half a dozen pix of the Pike. Only one resembles the place in the '60s as I recall it, the rest are way older.
This has become a free-association thread. Knott's Berry Farm, check. Navy shipyard tours, check. I dimly remember one visit to a shipyard and seeing dirigibles, which really dates the memories. Toured the destroyer my Dad served on just after WWII.
I don't know what the parks in LA are like these days, but back then there were some fantastic parks everywhere. Even adjusting for childhood foreshortening by looking at a map, they built 'em huge, usually covering several city blocks, and most I recall had ponds and lots of playground equipment. Lots of military equipment, something I don't see anymore, and I recall at least a couple of ancient jet fighters. (I'll bet TB could interject a short tirade here about the decline of martial fervor in America, but I'm not sure it wasn't a good idea to tone down the bellicosity in places more appropriate for relaxation than fighting.)
Ahh, the rose-colored spectacles of reminiscence.
