I'd be a lot more sympathetic to the plight of Big Business...

...if the hobbies of so many of them weren't providing outrageous salaries and perks for their highest-ranking executives while crying poverty over high taxation and laying off their workers.

CEOs have no trouble meeting those high price tags on luxury cars.

I'm glad you saw fit to help the less fortunate at the holidays. A lot of people do that. It's a good thing. But it doesn't last past the 26th of December. What happens for the rest of the year? They can't eat furniture. Toys won't cure an ear infection. It's not enough to support the weak two weeks out of fifty-two. If you would help people become what they might be, they need the support to become strong before they can become competent and independent.

There will be those who never achieve complete competence and independence. There are those who were once competent and independent who cease to function that way for one reason or another. How we deal with those people says more about us as a civilized society than it says about them.

The problem with charity is that it isn't consistent. Especially in this country at this time, when people's attention span is about 20 minutes. When shall we keep the spirit of Christmas the whole year long?

Mary Anne
