<Of course Tom is willing to take advantage of the amenities in society that others pay for. Tom is what is known as an intellectual free rider. He is willing to take from the common welfare--he merely objects to his hard earned (?) dollars being taken from him in taxes.
A small problem with this "free rider" scenario is that I'm one of the guys paying the bills. I pay my taxes, and even approve of some of the things they are spent on. And the attempt to sneakily switch tracks from wealth redistribution to "amenities" like building roads might work on some people, as might a fuzzy term like "common welfare." Wouldn't try it here.
I will choose to ignore the question mark behind "earned." I have been a lot more forthcoming about what I do, who's paying me, and what I earn (I'm in the top 5 percent paying almost 60 percent of the taxes) than almost anyone else here.
Still nice to see you on the board, though.
