Howdy. Been a while!
So you picked up on the "Christian concept of Grace" thought. I suspect that's "past" 'em. No idea. And they're the Christians.
There's some hope. About the time T. B. has grandchildren, he'll mellow. That's usually when it happens. When he becomes aware of his own mortality. It has to be absolutely miserable to be living better than 99.9% of the world ever has, and not be able to appreciate it, focussing instead on what it costs to have that standard of living.
(I knew a lot of people who were drafted, and if they were alive would be delighted to pay taxes.)
The Hindus say that a man spends the first 20 years of life learning rules, the second making a living, the third learning a spiritual way of life, and the fourth 20 years teaching it.
He's not too delayed.
For some of the others, they're too young. A couple of them remind me of myself at that age, well, when I was in high school, I think they're much older.
And as for the other person you mention, at best there's a substance abuse problem. There are ways to treat that. If not alcoholism, the poor person is in deep trouble, a brain tumor, a hormone problem, something really, really grim. And missing the advantage of positive early socialization, which can be made up for. Lousy self-image, deservedly so.
Great to "talk" with you again, have you heard from Publius? He got pretty hot about Israel, haven't "seen" from him since.
Gotta go. The nice thing about watching two Eastern football teams is that one of them has to lose.
