People have been getting more out of Social Security than they put in ever since the average death rate climbed over 68 years old. The people who complain about how they want back what they put in need to get a lump-sum check and get over themselves. It would last about 5 years, even with an adjustment for inflation.
The reasons we pay out to the GI generation without complaint, truth be told, are two:
1) They saved the world.
2) They're our parents. There are enough Boomers out there who think Social Security is a bargain if it means their parents don't have to move in with them.
So there.
It will never happen while they live.
We Boomers, on the other hand, so famous for our dramatic pronouncements about our principles, have a beautiful opportunity to show that we aren't just windbags by saving the economy for the children. We are a huge demographic. We can break the system or save it.
Hell, yes, I'd do it. But we have to talk it up NOW. It will take a lot of talk to get the idea moving.
