They exist to make money Tom. Unfortunately it has become obvious to most that outrageous CEO pay has led to very short term thinking even when it comes to their own profits. Regulations cost them money, even things that save them money are viewed with skepticism if the payback is much more than three years. Governments do have beaurocracies that become self centered, but ultimately they answer to everyone not a very small subset of the population. Arguing that decisions are made based on self interest is irrelevant. All human decisons are made that way. The value of science is in clearing the fog of self deception caused by the human tendency to believe what they want. The issue can only be debated scientifically on the basis of technical details not discussing who has the most to gain even if that is clealry those fighting GW.
I respect most of your arguements Tom even when I disagree, but the idea that GW is some fictitious government grab for power is simply loony tunes. I don't doubt that some on both sides of any policy issue will be motivated by personal or political gain and there are many manufactured issues, but this is not one.
Regards,
Mark
