The paradigm changed when a few lunatics from the ass end of the Earth flew planes into our buildings. We don't have the luxury of just watching this all play out on the newsreels like the old days.
Iran, the major supporter of Hezbollah, Hamas, and other radical organizations, is going hell-bent for nuclear weapons capability. I don't think the U.S., or the rest of the West, is going to just be able to sit that out when it happens. Iranian leaders are already on the record as saying that the nuclear destruction of Israel would be worth any retaliatory damage.
The "Prime Directive" worked on Star Trek because it was normally applied by a star-faring civilization to planets that didn't even have space flight yet. All the Enterprise had to do was leave, and forget the planet ever existed. This kind of thinking didn't work on Klingons, Romulans, the Borg, or any of the other hostile races with the ability to reach out and attack the Federation.
