What would end terrorism?
No matter what you do, you are going to piss them off somehow, whether you try to understand them and tailor your policy to thier desires, live your life ignoring them, or actively try to stomp them out makes no difference to them.
Sounds like you're saying that there's no solution, that we'll be permanently at war with terrorism until the end of time. I'd like to think that there must be something we can do to solve the problem.
Has a terrorist movement ever been permanently destroyed through the application of military force?
I phrased the question precisely to try and make it closely relevant to today's situation and strategy. In the first part, it's not enough to kill or capture members of the group if others come along to take up their mission; the movement isn't destroyed, only individual members. In the second part I mean specifically use of formal military forces. Terrorist movements in the past have been destroyed through other means--for example, the Anarchists of a century ago in Britain and America were destroyed through application of the legal system (prosecution and imprisonment/execution). Similarly, America's militia terrorists are pretty well under control through continued legal pressure and ongoing surveillance.
What would work?
