I sure wish you'd shake that bad habit of characterizing everything in terms of extremes. I never said "that only an actual attack is sufficient provocation for military action"--that's your extreme interpretation. OTOH, you did say that "nothing" would be sufficient grounds for preemptive military action, and that is extreme. That's what worries me. I want to see some sense of restraint, some exercize of judgment, not this hair trigger impulse to draw the gun and start shooting at shadows...or nothing at all.

The Bush TriggerHappy Doctrine has had mixed results in its first application, to put it charitably--the shadows that spooked Bush don't seem to contain the WMD boogeyman after all. But at least the outcome wasn't downright disastrous for America. What happens next time? How many times in a row will the coin come up heads? Sooner or later we're going to get burned bigtime.

I meant what I said. Only a coward shoots first and asks questions later.
