I hate to argue with a sick man...

especially a gentleman and a scholar, but...

As it stands now, there are no institutional checks-and-balances in place to ensure that the decision is really justified. Bush has taken upon himself the power to make war entirely on his say-so. That's wrong, counter to the wise philosophy of the Founders, and a formula for disaster.

Cooked intelligence is too low a standard; it's damn near the "nothing" that you think is all we need. That's too much power to vest in the hands of a President or a Vice-President.

The myth that Bush did this solo, and seemingly on a whim, is just flatout wrong, and it's getting very old IMO. Intelligence presentations were made to congress in both secret and other sessions, and the House and Senate voted overwhelmingly* to give Bush the authority to do what needed doing in Iraq, in a resolution that accounted for all the legalities required.

Checks and balances were there, and they were used.

While the Democrats in congress, especially the presidential candidates, are backing water as fast as they can, they saw most of the same facts Bush did, and came to the same conclusions back then.

On top of that, over 40 other nations sided with us in this effort, and not all of them were little ones.

So can we scrap that particular myth as well?

* The resolution passed the House by 296 votes to 133, and the Senate by 77 votes to 23.
