no, no, no,

You totally misunderstood me

I did not mean anything partisan. I meant that you would still feel the same way but someone other than Bush might make you more comfortable or at least less confident they lied. Maybe I am wrong about that. No offense was intended.

Here is the Franks piece. Sorry for the 100,000 number I have no idea how I came up with that figure unless it somehow got mixed in my mind with the terrorist threat that was posted here a few days ago. I'm not sure what Franks considers mass casualties but 100,000 seems to fill the bill.

I certainly had no intention of frightening you into changing your mind (folding). I have no illusions about changing minds at HZ. Surely there is more to this place than altering opinions.

I do not think that the people will suddenly want some "strong man" government in the event of such a disaster but regardless of what the people want, a hit of that size with the associated damage is likely to result in a period of martial law. God only know where that would wind up.

I lived with the nuke anniliation threat as well. When I was in school all US students were issues dog tags so they could identify our charred remains. It was spooky. When I was a young father we had the Cuban Missile crisis and for a few days I dropped my children at school not knowing if they would live out the week.

My fear of today's threat is equal to if not greater and just as real imo as then. Notwithstanding Soviet bombast, as time went on the reality of MAD was a strong deterrent. Our current enemy is not subject to any deterrent.
