Saddam was bad. True.
However, if we are to condemn him, we have to include Bush, Sr., Cheney, Powell, and Rumsfeld in the same, the very same condemnation. Those folks, for instance, gave Saddam biological weapons, and they didn't do that hoping he wouldn't use them.
He was given the weapons and gas, US battle planners helped him figure out how to use gas, and as a matter of fact the US supplied the helicopters with which he gassed the Iranians because Iraq didn't have any, all under the Reagan Administration.
Where is the moral high road? If Saddam is called into account, why not the US?
If the Russians had supplied Saddam with biological weapons, we would be merciless.
Another thought is that the "cure" to Saddam. The US is finding out that it is impossible to prevent tribal and religious factions from expressing their differences in any gentle way. The Kurds are now demanding independence, not just autonomy, the Shiites walked out of the constitutional convention, and that body has missed it's deadline after Bremer threatened to veto their decisions.
The "cure" is exactly the same as the disease. The commander of the 1st US Marines said, "If they Iraqis cooperate with us, we are the best friend they ever had - if they resist, we are their worst enemy."
Which is exactly what Saddam said, possibly from the same palace where the 1st US Marine commander lives and works.
All the while Halliburton is stacking up billions, oil companies are frothing at the mouth, the American treasury is being drained at a record rate, Americans and Iraqis are being killed and maimed, and twice as many Americans as there are Iraqis don't have health insurance.
I guess that's it for starters.
