A series of stories I told my kids, after I adopted them, was about one of their "new" ancestors.
General Beauregard Bowser, CSA
After many adventures, usually involving a plucky little girl observing or knowing something the big people didn't and getting them out of a jam, Beauregard ultimately fought his way north to Canada, where he sat out the rest of the war.
The possibilities are endless. And they loved the stories, especially before bedtime when we were camping.
We were near a falls one night, I finished the Beauregard story, and told 'em it was about time to go to bed, they were going to turn off the falls in about 1/2 hour.
The next morning the middle one climbed out of her tent. I wished her a good morning, and added that they had just turned on the falls.
"Oh, Dad, I tried to stay awake last night to hear them turned off!!!"
As I have said, the best gift a man can give his children is a great mother.
