Philosophically, you are of course, correct, but the rule book drops to the floor pretty quickly when you are in a fight for your life, especially when the opposition plays by no rules at all.
You may be looking at the glass as half-empty. In our current conflicts in the Middle East, our enemies have no rules at all, using children, ambulances, and our own sympathies against us. And in the case of Afghanistan, we were dealing with people who flew planes full of men, women and children into office buildings.
Under these circumstances, we have behaved with remarkable restraint, considering the real power at our command. From a purely military standpoint, and no other, we would need to spend no more than forty minutes fighting a war, and not a single American soldier would ever need to set foot on the lifeless remains. That there are still living Afghans, or for that matter, in another context, living Palestinians, seems to indicate that the Western world is not entirely without morals.
In fact, we are working to rebuild these nations, spending billions of our money on them, trying to protect civilians even at the cost of American lives, and doing all this with the full intent of returning those nations to their inhabitants. We did this in Japan and Europe as well.
Look back through the last thousand years of history, and show me an analogy to this kind of behavior in any nation or civilization. Something even close. I am very proud of my country.
