"As a human being, you have no choice about the fact that you need a philosophy. Your only choice is whether you define your philosophy by a conscious, rational, disciplined process of thought and scrupulously logical deliberation - or let your subconscious accumilate a junk heap of unwarranted conclusions, false generalizations, undefined contradictions, undigested slogans, unidentified wishes, doubts and fears thrown together by chance ..."
The Republican philosophy isn't logical or rational. Republicans believe:
Abortion should be illegal, but the women prevented from having abortions will be good parents.
If they aren't good parents, they shouldn't have had children.
Educating teenagers about birth control in the schools sends the wrong message, so abstinence should be taught instead.
Society shouldn't invest taxpayers' money to improve the quality of the lives of children at risk. The criminal justice system, including the bulding and maintenance of prisons, is a better way to handle the problem of blighted lives.
Heterosexuality isn't a choice. Homosexuality is.
Better dead than Red. Republicans believe the people of every country have a right to choose their own leaders, unless those people choose communists. If that happens, America is morally obligated to use murder and terrorism to thwart the will of those people.
. . .
Instead of resolving the contradictions and adjusting their philosophies accordingly, Republicans simply engage in what Rand called "blanking out," the cowardly refusal to examine reality.
