re: On safety nets

Everything in moderation and some things in absentia.

Social Security is not in the same boat as Medicare or the many floating national healthcare programs. The pay-out only arrives after a substantial pay-in. Naturally, I blame FDR and his buddy Stalin's influence for the poorly thought out mess - short term thinking.

I just wonder which nation will emerge with the best healthcare when the US goes down the tubes. Unfortunately, the result will be to stigmatize the American working poor and the middle class with cruddy healthcare, doctors and hospitals and a super-elitist private sector will set up shop here or abroad if necessary to serve the rich and super-rich.

You mentioned it seems inevitable, and you're probably correct. Demographics alone point to the less educated, working poor dwarfing the semi-educated middle class and and educated upper middle class. Our porous borders have sped up this doomsday.

However, don't expect Hillary to actually enact such legislation. She's loves corporate money way too much. Edwards wouldn't enact such either because his trial lawyer buddies would tear him to shreds. So that leaves Obama. If by some strange working of events Obama can get elected - I fully expect some form of national healthcare to strangle the private sector and force good doctors to flee for places where their talents are sufficiently renumerated.

"Physician heal thyself" is still the best policy of all.
