And there's a certain ring of truth in it, although if unions have been knuckling under for all these years, companies like GM wouldn't be crumbling under astronomical benefit levels.
One would think large corporations dealing with massive medical care costs would jump at the chance to dump all that on the government, wouldn't you?
I can't speak for others, but my main objections to nationalized health care are the same as they would be for nationalized anything. In the long run, it's not going to work very well.
As just one point, the price controls that would be inevitable (usually reworded as "bargaining on prices"--as though you can call negotiating prices with your only legal customer "bargaining") would pretty much wreck the cutting-edge medical development in the U.S. There are cutting-edge drug companies in other countries. Look up who they make their money on.
People point out that Canada and others buy their drugs under a special deal. I pointed out that you can't give everyone the "senior discount" at a restaurant or it goes broke. Nobody got it.
