Because eventually taxes are higher to pay for it. And we're not asking for "free" healthcare here, but how about a sliding pay scale for those who can't afford it?
All doctors or specialists run about $120-$180 for a first doctor's office visit. Tack on the first couple of prescription medicines he gives you and pay for the two or three "tests" he suggests you need (performed by a company he and associates run), and you're up to the $3,000 mark in ONE WEEK. Maybe even one day. That's more than most people pay for health insurance in one year.
Yet many families, let alone individuals, can afford that in their monthly budget, or can afford to pay the three grand when those savings are the only thing that keep them from disaster. In ONE WEEK.
I have a problem looming that needs exactly that care, and yet I can't afford to even have the problem looked at now. So I let it slide. This is not healthy nor comforting to me. What's worse, if the problem is serious, I'm looking at thousands and thousands for care and recovery. Got any suggestions on how I can go about getting help in your wonderful system Tom?
