So your contention should be then

That the governments around the world that do take on much more social responsibility should bring their leaders incredible power over the people. Hmm, let's look at some nations where things such as socialized medicine are the norm today.

Canada has turned into such an imperialistic state. Why the government there has such control over their individuals with it's prisons full of pot smokers. Oh wait, the people there are free to grow the stuff in their back yards. Well, then there must be intrusion on the people's lives in other ways. Um, well no. Folks there pretty much come and go without intelligence agencies listening in on their phone calls. Crime must be rampant. Uh, not actually. Crime levels (especially the violent ones) seem much lower than our wonderful republic. Well, those citizens are constantly whining about their taxes and the terrible public services they get. Hmm, I've met tons of Canadians in my day and they all seem really happy about where they live.

My good friend that grew up in Italy recently raved about the level of public health care he saw in that country and yet tells me political power is extremely fleeting there because of the huge array of political parties. Seems when you allow lots of different viewpoints they're forced to share the power. He's constantly amazed at how intrusive our government is into the lives of its citizens.

We could go on and on and you'd find some disgruntled individual from some socialized country that would be miserable wherever he or she lived to prove your point but ultimately you have none other than this vision of us turning into the USSR because we give the government control of something that they actually seem very capable of doing.
