re: "Probability Broach"

I see what you mean about evolution sorting out the "Atlanta Declaration". But you know, isn't that kind of pointless? I mean, haven't we been there, done that, already? We're the product of a couple of million years of slaughtering each other and we've become unchallenged masters of killing. Isn't civilization an attempt get beyond that? Isn't there anything better to look forward to?

I'd say I've read about a tenth of the AH stories on that very long bibliography, including "Man in the High Castle". I read Randall Garrett's "Lord D'Arcy" stories as a kid when they were serialized in Analog, and still remember them fondly. Some of Harry Turtledove's stories, too; and Poul Anderson's Tme Patrol series is an interventionist take on the genre. Now that you've pointed it out to me, I realize that I'm really fascinated by the genre, and I'll seek out more of it.

It's about time for me to reread "Atlas Shrugged". This would be my fourth time, if I remember right. It's not so much because I consider it a philosophical manifesto as an example of science fiction; and not because the writing's good in most places (my gawd, some of Rand's writing is horrible!), but because when she gets on a roll like Francisco's soliloquy, man does she rock!

she predicted pretty much the whole of modern leftism with uncanny accuracy, clean down to the philosophy.

That was less than a half century ago. Could it be that it wasn't so much that she was prescient as simply a matter of conservatives' worldview just hasn't changed in all that time? I remember watching rightwing diatribes when I was a little kid, and the essence hasn't changed: Taxes too high, government too big, commies/liberals under every bed undermining the moral fiber of society and plotting to steal our precious bodily fluids. What's new? I mean, wouldn't you expect conservatives to conserve their point of view?
