Have faith
To do that up right would require ...weeks of research.
The thread's not going anywhere. The software will keep resurrecting it as long as people keep posting. There's no hurry.
I have seen an arguable case made that had not FDR gone for the leftist solutions that he did, more radical forces may have taken over before the market system recovered on its own.
I'm willing to stipulate that a Republican alternate President would have seen the signs and taken action to head off the radicals. I'm trying to frame the experiment to give y'all the maximum chance to show how much better we'd be adhering to conservative principles. Smoothing over relatively minor bumps in the road like that is perfectly consistent with the spirit of hypothesis.
many other people have already addressed alternate histories of this kind.
Sure. And the genre has legs--how many probability branches can derive from quantum fluctuations? It won't ever be exhausted, since history continues in parallel with speculations about alternatives.
I urge you to try, Tom. At least produce an outline; that should be possible without weeks of research.
Here are the stakes in political terms: "Evil FDR and his socialist policies" has been a pillar of conservative rhetoric for longer than I've been alive. If that's not empty rhetoric, then surely you have some idea of what the alternatives would have produced.
Or put it another way: Whenever anybody tries to convince us that their ideology will produce a better world, then we certainly have a right to be given a detailed picture of what that better world would look like. What better, more scientific, way to do that than to start with known conditions, influenced by known external factors (global economy, Hitler, population growth, etc.), and show in a rigorously logical way how your stronger philosophy will produce a better outcome?
To avoid the question is to damage the credibility of claims to ideological superiority. Forgive me, man, but I won't take "no" for an answer!
