What's the point? It's an article of faith for most Americans now, never mind leftists and liberals, that many things in our lives would be utterly impossible unless controlled by a powerful central government.
How am I supposed to come up with a scenario that shows freedom works when everyone has been trained since birth to believe it doesn't? If I came up with a scenario that, for example, did not have Social Security in it, brains here would shut down like a reactor with the control rods dropped in. Private roads? Private education? Minimum regulations? State and local control of government issues? Blank-out.
The government has spend three generations training us to believe that without their benvolent control, we would all die horribly. This is reinforced every election. Cut the growth of a social spending program? Why not just send all the poor to the goddam gas chambers! If a private corporation declared that their product was essential for life, you would all be instantly suspicious of their motives. Yet elected officials, who thrive on dependence, insist that dependence is good for you, and you eat it up.
Asking me to write a libertarian history in this environment is like asking someone to write an SF story about colonizing the Moon during the time when Galileo was getting reamed by the Church.
If you want real world examples of alternate histories, take a look at nations like Germany, Korea, and China, where identical cultures, languages, etc. were divided up, and one side took the road of freedom and the other collectivism. The results are proven history, yet nobody cares.
April 15th is coming. We're paying more taxes than a medieval serf, and nobody cares.
Most of you support destruction of the most advanced private medical system on the planet, and turning it over to the government. Collectivism is so attractive, and so much easier than responsibility.
Let someone else write it. I have been writing the story of individualism versus collectivism for a few years now. Did I change any minds?
